US remaking British series has been happening since the beginning of time (give or take a few years) and it drives me a bit insane I must admit. Did you know that Threes Company was a British remake? Did you also know that the US tried to remake Fawlty Towers 3 times and failed? Three times!! Then there was the attempt at the US The IT Crowd, sigh. We all know the times that the remakes have worked out well like with The Office (mostly because they made their own show off of the concept of the original show) and Being Human (which I personally am not a fan of).
The most frustrating remake for me was with Skins because the moment I heard about it I said to myself (and anyone who would listen) “Americans will never be comfortable with a show like Skins.” Mind you the remake that was done by Mtv had removed all the profanity but had also had zero heart like the UK version. I think the most irritating part was the acting was just so awful and they tried to copy the show too much and the show is just too British to copy so closely. I think they even used some British slang, which must have confused many teenagers.
I think a big part of why the remakes may never quite work in this day and age is because as Americans we have a lot of “access” to British shows that we wouldn’t have had a decade ago. Many Americans watch shows like Skins and Misfits and have no need or interest in an American version. I don’t think any of us can deny that part of what we love about British television is the accents and the slang, it’s such a different world than the one we live in.
Now there are 2 remakes on the way: The Inbetweeners, which already has the trailer out and fans are rebelling already (I warned you people) and Misfits (which is still mostly rumors but I believe they will try their best to make it happen). At least we can breathe a sigh of relief that the US Outnumbered show isn’t going to happen, at least for now.
Part of the issue here is that the producers or creators of the show are willing to sell their series to America for a price, which makes me sad. I mean, I get it, it’s hard to turn down the money but I wish every once and a while they’d turn it down. Also, from what I assume, American television production companies think that Americans won’t accept a British series or just won’t understand it.
What are your thoughts on this?
